SOCIAL SYSTEMS DESIGN

The Agora Project: The New Agoras of the 21st Century
A metaphor for social action contexts in which people can make collective decisions about their future.

International Systems Institute (ISI), Glossary A glossary intended to help organize and define Systems Design terms.

GROUP INQUIRY AND ACTION

Integrative Sciences
Website devoted to public information and education about Interactive Management, a process which enables human beings to work together (in face-to-face mode) to resolve complexity.

CWA, Ltd. and INTERACT
Two major organizations with exceptional abilities who are each enaged in the practice of "Interactive Management," facilitating the design of collaborative action plans to address complex situations through teamwork.

Virtual Teams and Collaborative Learning Networks
Two examples of emerging electronic networking systems to facilite use of Internet technology by people working with people collaboratively (in many-to-many mode) across boundaries of place, which are now being offered by high priced corporate consultants, and in book format.

KEY SYSTEMS DESIGN METHODOLOGIES

Computer Based Delphi Process
A communications structure aimed at producing detailed critical examination and discussion among groups in which members (from 30 to 100 individuals) are dispersed in space and time (1995).

Nominal Group Technique (NGT)
A structured workshop/meeting/process, usually facilitated by a "third party", which identifies and ranks the major problems or issues affecting the group. NGT has been successfully used in the conduct of group meetings via Internet Relay Chat, described as an Electronic Town Hall (ETH) at various sites, August 1995, see also Use of Internet Relay Chat (IRC) in Distributed Consensus Forming (PDF), as reported by Professor Billy Vaughn Koen of the University of Texas at Austin (also Dean, Graduate School of Decision Science and Technology, The Tokyo Institute of Technology).

Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM)
A computer assisted learning process that enables an individual or group user to develop a structure or map showing interrelations among previously determined elements according to a selected contextual relationship or priority.

Architectural Tradeoff Analysis (ATA) Method
A structured technique for understanding the tradeoffs inherent in the architectures of software intensive systems, used as a basis for optimizing group choice of preferred alternatives.
