| Your Home Area |
Your home area is where your files reside. You own all of the files in your home area. You can create new files or new directories in your home area. When you log in, you are automatically put into your home area. If you print your current working directory, you will see something like the following:
|
UNIX>pwd /home/username |
Here the home area is /home/username.
If I want to cd into my home area, I would just type:
|
UNIX>cd /home/username |
Actually, there are a number of ways that I can specify my home area. The following are all equivalent:
|
UNIX>cd UNIX>cd ~username UNIX>cd /home/username |
The cd command with no arguments will put me into my home area. The string ~username expands into the string '/home/username'. If you need to specify your home area in a shell script, this is a good way to do it.
