War Service May 1861 raised 13th New York - Col., First Bull Run, resigned August 1861, March 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded Dist of Mississippi, commanded 7th Divn/XVII Corps in Vicksburg campaign, Champion's Hill, Big Black River Bridge, resigned December 1863.
Post War Career University professor, US marshal, city surveyor.
