Objectives
The primary goals of this program are to increase the number of trained interpreters in the Southeast and to improve the quality of training they receive. The University also houses a four-year educational interpreter training program. The objectives of the Basic Interpreter Training Program (BITP) are:
- To train persons who possess signing skills in the principles of interpreting/transliterating primarily in educational settings
- To prepare beginning interpreters for screening/evaluation of interpreting skills
- To provide interpreters with experience in interpreting and transliterating
- To provide participants with an assessment of their skills
Program Topics
- Ethics, professionalism and the RID Code of Ethics
- American Sign Language, Deaf Culture and sign systems
- Sign to voice and voice to sign interpreting and transliterating
- Interpreting/transliterating in a variety of educational and related situations
Participant's Background
- Applicants should be comfortable in signed conversation with Deaf people and interested in becoming interpreters.
- A video sample of participants signing will be required with the application.

Housing
Participants will be housed at the Tennessee School for the Deaf (TSD) located approximately four (4) miles from the University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville, TN.
Only double occupancy rooms are available and participants will be responsible for providing their own linens. TSD is a smoke-free facility!
Meals
Participants are responsible for providing their
own meals. The cottages at TSD have full kitchens available for participant's
use. Additionally there are a variety of fast food and full service restaurants
available in Knoxville (approximately 3-4 miles from the Tennessee School for
the Deaf campus).
