This presentation will provide a description of practical courses, which were developed at
two programs that serve deaf and hard of hearing individuals. The lessons are designed to
meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students who are finding their place in a
hearing society. The focus will be on issues that these individuals face in their everyday
life. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in individual and group
activities that demonstrate various lessons used at each site. Lessons such as
self-exploration and awareness, values clarification, decision-making, and interpersonal
communication will be discussed and shared. In addition, we will
demonstrate a highly visual way to explain the spread of HIV/AIDS and we will
demonstrate the “Baby Think-It-Over Program(.” Upon the completion of the presentation,
the participants will be able to leave with handouts that describe the lessons discussed.
A reference list will also be provided so that the participants can acquire additional
information if necessary.
