What Support Services Will I Need Outside of the Classroom?

Discuss the types of support services which may be needed outside of the classroom setting.  Give a brief description of each service and how it can assist individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing in activities related to academic, social, and personal needs and interests.

Outside of the Classroom
- Interpreting (extra curricular events & other social interaction opportunities)
- Tutoring     - Counseling
- Advising     - Developmental Studies
- Career development   - Access to TTYs


Additional Activities/Resources:

Ask several different sign language interpreters (ASL, Pidgin, SEE, Cued Speech) to begin interpreting the session.  Video tapes of different sign language interpreters can be substituted.  Explain to the individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing in the audience that they should watch the different interpreters and be prepared to discuss their communication preference later on in the presentation.  Discussion of the communication preferences will follow later in this presentation.

Discuss the laws which protect the individual rights of students with disabilities with regard to support services in higher education (see Appendix A).
