Macy's Parade, 1974-84, acrylic, pastel/canvas, 81" x 120"
Delaney combined numerous preliminary sketches to stage an airy recreation of this annual Thanksgiving Parade. The spectators and police are depicted prominently, seeming to be more involved in personal interaction than in watching the parade. The expressionistic quality and change of scale within figure groups relates to the neo-expressionistic movement of the 80's. The contrast between the rawness of the seemingly unfinished area and the more developed areas of "filled in" painting reveal Delaney's method of working from drawing to painting.
