This is one of the few portraits painted from life by Delaney. On a visit home to Knoxville, Joseph was in his brother Samuel's barber shop where their mother, Delia, frequently sat and did needlework. Suddenly he felt the need to "capture his mother in painting." 36

This sensitive study in muted color and soft tones does indeed "capture" her dignity and serenity.
