I hurried over to the library and checked out both volumes of Cajori. It is
a fabulous work. At this point I have only perused the book for an hour,
but I have not been able to find any mention of scientific notation in it.
While I was in the library, I also checked a couple of dozen other books
that were shelved near this one. The only book which even mentioned
scientific notation was by Resnikoff and Wells, and it gives only a brief
description of the notation, without any history at all. My library doesn't
have Tropfke, but that will surely have to be the next place to look.
So I am still searching. Thanks for the help.
