In addition to the useful response by James Landau to the query below by
Romulo Lins, let me add that the game of Hexapawn, distributed
promotionally by IBM many years ago, offers a game in which the more you
win, the more you lose. Hexapawn demonstrates how a machine can be
"instructed to make decisions" and avoid repeating past errors. The game
was devised by Martin Gardner and published in Scientific American in
1962.
