Weil died on August 6 in Princeton, New Jersey, U S A.
The obituary in today's Washington Post is worth reading; it can be found
on the web.
Quotation from Weil:
God exists since mathematics is consistent,
and the devil exists since we cannot prove it.
The newspaper says
In 1939, as the menace of Hitler loomed over France, Dr. Weil was
called for military service. In an action over which he was said to
have remained ambivalent years later, he fled to Finland, explaining
that while he could be of some use doing mathematics,
as a soldier I would be entirely useless.
It was remembered that at the [advanced] institute, widely regarded
as an intellectual Olympus, when he was asked for his department's
fiscal requirements, he would respond:
Give us enough chalk.
That was characteristic, his daughter said.
He was never boring.
Perhaps John Horton Conway also at Princeton has anecdote or two about Weil.
Of course his sister was the renowned Simone.
Best wishes from Annapolis,
