Can anyone tell me something about the nautical device known as
"martelojo"?

The reference that prompts my question is from this passage regarding
Medieval trade in southern Europe:

"In the later period the compass, astrolabe, _martelojo_ and other
nautical inventions facilitated long-distance navigation, while the
French _pave' du Roi_ with its rectangular slabs and the Lombard
circular stones improved the surface of roads in muddy regions."
- _Cambridge Economic History of Europe_, Vol. 2, p. 362.

Thank you for any assistance.
