There was a posting to our sister list some time ago:

Thomas Harriot, a half century before Newton, showed that stereographic
projection is conformal. The proof involves a simple picture. Since he is
woefully underappreciated -- his many surviving mss having not been
published -- he could be a poster candidate.

which prompted me to ask:

Can anyone tell me, on behalf of a colleague, how to find out the history
of stereographic projection, and perhaps also some other projections. For
example, just when was stereo projection introduced, and by whom.

Many thanks, David Fowler

Nobody replied. Can anyone here help? David
