Just to finish the topic, I'll add that the form "Diophantes"
occurred in some manuscripts. Here is a quotation from the
first page of Heath's _Diophantus of Alexandria_(1885/1910):

The divergences between writers on Diophantus used to begin,
as Cossali [1799] said, with the last syllable of his name.
There is now, however, no longer any doubt that the name was
DiophantOS, not DiophantES.

(Note) Greek authority is overwhelmingly in favour of
DiophantOS. The following is the evidence, which is
collected in the second volume of Tannery's edition....
