The two major collections that I know of are at the Mathematisches
Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach and the Emilio Segr`e Visual Archives of the
American Institute of Physics. I used both to get pictures for _Proofs and
Confirmations_.

The people at Oberwolfach were very accomodating: They mailed me their
photo of Jacobi for me to copy and mail back. Their web site is at
www.mfo.de. The Segr`e Visual Archive charges for use of its pictures and
supplies copies. That's where I got the portrait of Cauchy. Their site is
www.aip.org/history.
