I meant to say
GORDAN discussed the proof with Hilbert before it was published. In
a letter of Feb. 24 1890 he said "the points are quite important, and
correct" but he complained about the exposition and Hilbert took this very
badly.
It is discussed, and Gordan's letter included, in DER BRIEFWECHSEL
DAVID HILBERT-FELIX KLEIN, Frei ed. (Goettingen, Vandenhoeck and Ruprecht
1985) especially pages 62-65 and 86.
