There is a factual error in my remarks about Stein's book. Toward the
end of paragraph three I remark parenthetically that both Tischendorf
and Heiberg copied the figures as they appear in the codex. This
statement says too much. To my knowledge Tischendorf did not copy the
figures; Heiberg alone appears to have copied THE METHOD. The error
occurred because I saw two copies of pertinent METHOD pages at The
Walters Gallery, three weeks ago, one by Heiberg and the other Heath's
translation of the same page. A copy of Tischendorf's 1846 travel book
remarking on "a palimpsest dealing with mathematics" is on exhibit,
perhaps in the same cabinet.
