Thanks to all who found earlier references on the
"elliptic-hyperbolic-parabolic" classification of PDEs. I AM correct, am
I not, in thinking it was Felix Klein who introduced such a classification
into geometry? If so, I would think the classification of PDEs must
follow. (Could it possibly have been earlier?)
