You might read a biography of Marquise Emilie du Chatelet, a mistress of
Voltaire, who translated Newton's Principia into French. Voltaire and Emilie
spent many years together at her Chateau where they were visited by many
scholars. Voltaire wrote his Elogic Historique which was on the Marquise's
translation. About her, he was quoted as saying "a woman who has translated
and explained Newton, (is) in one word a very great man."

Obviously, Voltaire had read Newton's work and had opinions about it.
