HPM 2000 Taipei
The Department of Mathematics at National Taiwan Normal University
(NTNU) is pleased to announce that, with fund from the National
Science Council (NSC) etc., it will be hosting the international
conference on HPM 2000, "History in Mathematics Education: Challenges
for a new millennium" (HME), on August 9-14, in Taipei, TAIWAN.
HME, one of the satellite meetings of ICME-9, is sponsored by the HPM,
the International Study Group on the Relations between the History and
Pedagogy of Mathematics. It will follow the examples set by Florence's
HPM next to Budapest's ICME-6, Toronto's HPM next to Quebec's ICME-7,
and Braga's HEM next to Sevilla's ICME-8. The main purpose of the
Taipei's HME is, therefore, to create a forum entirely for those who
concerns about the issues of HPM. During the occasion, participants
will be encouraged to elaborate just how history of mathematics could
be integrated in the three key components of mathematics education,
teaching, learning as well as curriculum.
Taiwan, the "formosa" island in the eyes of Portuguese sailor, adapted
itself to the conflict between the West and the East from the 16th
century onwards. It certainly is benefited from the episodes occurred
in its history. Due to this special location in the very beginning of
the new millennium, the Taipei's HME would like to provide an opportunity
for participants sitting around the round table, share each other the
ways how mathematical culture was transmitted from one place to another.
The HME is expected to attract some 300 participants including 150
international and 150 local historians, mathematicians, mathematics
educators as well as teachers around this island. At least 50
presentations concerning local context will be encouraged in order to
enrich the multicultural concern of HPM. A dialogue between the West
and the East in terms of HPM is, therefore, the focus that we, as the
local organizer, would like to share with the participants, especially
the international ones.
