Martin Davis and others among you might be interested in reading my
paper in Centaurus 1980, vol 24, pp. 110-116: An Archimedean Proof
of Heron's Formula for the Area of a Triangle, Reconstructed.
It opens with a misprint, so here is the corrected version of the
statement:
"Any triangle is the mean proportional between two rectangles,
one of which is contained by half the perimeter of the triangle and
half the perimeter diminished by one of the sides, whereas the other
is contained by half the perimeter diminished by either of the
remaining sides."
