You can try *Cardano, the Gambling Scholar*, by Oystein Ore
(Princeton University Press, 1953). Ore was a professor at Yale, a
mathematician rather than a historian, but managed to write several
quasi-popular and engaging biographies, the other I know of being of Abel.
In his Cardano book he goes into some detail about the nature of Cardano's
error.
