Dear HM listmembers,
    My wife's [she is from a Roman town in the foothill of Alps] remarks
on pragmatism during the Roman empire have made me curious about
mathematics and the basic sciences under the Roman empire.

Could some one please shed some light on the contributions to mathematics
under the Roman Empire.
