to James A Landau's lingvistic information may be added that in
Danish (and other Scandinavian languages) to "test" is "proeve"
(pronounced as French "preuve" with a audible 'e'), ultimately
borrowed from Latin "probare", meaning to "test" - although
already in classical Latin the verb had various shades of meaning,
including to "prove" = "show to be true".
I am inclined to think that this was always the case in English, too.
