As several writers have noted, the Gibbs phenomenon was actually
noted in print 50 years before Gibbs, in 1848 in fact by Henry
Wilbraham of Trinity College Cambridge.
I'd be grateful for any information about this man. It is probably
of limited enough interest that it should be sent off list.
