dear HM-ers,
julio cabillon noticed:
> PS: Mind that the term "Arithmetisirung" (rather than "Arithmetisierung")
> was the one used by Klein et al.
just for those non-native speakers: it doesn't make a difference in meaning,
its simply that the german orthography has changed since then.
but, more interestingly, if we allow for the term 'arithmetization' to occur
outside the 'arith.-programme of analysis' of the 19th century, as i suppose
it does in the quote julio gave, then i'm pretty sure i've seen the term
'arith.' elsewhere even earlier (either in connection with reducing geometry
to arithmetic or within the 'algebra of logic'-tradition, in which concepts
also were tentatively reduced to numbers. if time permits, i'll try to
relocate it (-- mmmh, since i'm always short of time, it would possibly be
wiser to promise a beer to anybody who finds it).
regards, bb
PS: dear julio, is it possible that the "McColl" from your quote is in fact
"Hugh MacColl"? -- sounds like that!
