I'm afraid you're wrong about the start of the last paragraph:
"Man ueberlaest sie gerne Historikern" rather means "This is often left
to historians" than your "One may happily leave this to historians".
I'm not satisfied with my translation, though (I'm not as firm at English
as I might wish) -- especially I didn't quite catch the irony in
Freudenthal's statement.
