While I've got nothing to say about the original query, let me
mention a book I happened to come across yesterday: It is called

The Eightfold Way. The beauty of Klein's quartic
 Silvio Leo, Ed.
 Cambridge Univ. Press 1999, ISBN 0 521 66066-1 hardback

It contains a number of articles around Klein's quartic prompted by
the unveiling of a sculpture at the MSRI in 1993, and all of these
articles should be interesting to anyone even remotely interested in
the history of the mathematics of the 19th century. Apart from an
English translation of Klein's article in which he studies his quartic,
there are contributions by Thurston, Karcher & Weber, Elkies, Macbeath,
the artist himself, and Adler, touching on a lot of mathematics from
Riemann geometry to Fermat's Last Theorem for n = 7.

Tell your library to order it - you will love it.
