Subject: Archimedes in the year 2000

Dear Antreas . . .

I am hoping to publish the first Archimedes paper in the year 2000. It
is entitled "The Turn of the Screw: Optimal Design of an Archimedes
Screw" and its bibliographic information is

   ASCE Journal of Hydraulic Engineering
   Volume 126, Number 1, January 2000, pp. 72-80

There is a link to a PDF file of the paper on my home page:

                http://www.mcs.drexel.edu/~crorres/

and also on my Archimedes site:

 http://www.mcs.drexel.edu/~crorres/Archimedes/Screw/optimal/optimal.html

I am submitting it to you for consideration to be listed in your
"Bibliographia Archimedeana" site at

               http://users.hol.gr/~xpolakis/ba.html

Last summer I spent two weeks in Syracuse, Sicily, with a BBC film team
participating in a documentary entitled "The Claw". The 50-minute
program is about the machine Archimedes used to sink attacking Roman
ships. A British engineer, Jo da Silva, constructed a modern version of
the machine and it was tested on a Sicilian fishing boat. I provided
some information about Archimedes on the program and a British
archaeologist, Roger Wilson, provided some historical background. The
program was shown in Britain on November 16, 1999, on channel BBC2 as
part of their "Secrets of the Ancients" series and got fairly good
ratings. It is scheduled to be shown in the USA sometime in this year.
