The MAA has just published my translation of "The Beginnings and Evolution
of Algebra" by Bashmakova and Smirnova (No. 23 in the Dolciani series).
What makes this book rather special is that the authors show that "the role
of indeterminate equations in the evolution of algebra was no less important
than that of determinate equations".
