As Randy K. Schwartz said the lazy eight on the Roman abacus in the
Biblioth\eque Nationale in Paris stands on top of the column for 1000.
The other columns are headed by the standard symbols:

|X|, (((I))), ((I)), oo, C, X, I, O
The O stands for the ounces. There is one further column for fractions
of the ounce.
The abacus does not carry any decoration whatsoever
