David Fowler
_The Mathematics of Plato's Academy: A New Reconstruction_, 2nd edition,
Oxford University Press (= OUP)
The second edition of my book _The Mathematics of Plato's Academy: A New
Reconstruction_ should be available very soon. It will incorporate a
substantial new Appendix, a new Epilogue, an extended Bibliography, a
rewritten Chapter V (on Elements X), two new Plates, and many changes and
additions to the text itself.
It will appear in hardback with a superb dustjacket at £60, but OUP will
give a 15% pre-publication discount to members of the British Society for
the History of Mathematics who order the book before the middle of January.
Unfortunately there is then a charge of 10% for all *overseas* postage, but
this is something that applies to all OUP books ordered directly from them.
Therefore for those members of the BSHM who order directly from OUP it will
cost in total:
UKP 51 to UK customers, or
UKP 56 + local VAT to overseas customers.
('UKP' = UK Pounds Sterling.)
Some might like to consider joining the BSHM in order to get the reduction;
the subscription will cost rather more than the discount will refund, but
will give a year's membership of this lively society.
Subscription details:
Ordinary member: UKP 20 per year, 1 Oct - 30 Sept.
Concessionary rate for student, unwaged, or retired: UKP 10
Membership also allows a Reciprocal Membership of the Canadian Society for
the History & Philosophy of Science for UKP 10, and a reduction to UKP 25
on a year's subscription to Historia Mathematica.
The society has a full programme of meetings, and members get the yearly
three copies of the very lively, well-produced, and useful Newsletter.

and should be returned to Dr June Barrow-Green, Mathematics Faculty, Open
University, Milton Keynes MK7 6AA, UK, j.g.barrow-green@open.ac.uk .
If you do decide to join, it would be a good idea to send her an email
saying that; and since she will be away from around January 10, you should
move promptly.
