Ancient as well as arabic antecedents may be found in
"Une histoire des mathematiques", by A. Dahan-Dalmenico & J. Peiffer
(Editions du Seuil, 1986).
Quite elementary aspects are treated in
"La fabuleuse histoire des nombres" by Eliane Cousquer, Diderot Editeur,
Arts et Sciences, 1998

"Great moments in Mathematics", by Howard Eves, and published by the
Mathematical Association of America (Two volumes: Before 1650 and After
1650), has interesting themes and exercises
