The formula for 22/7 - pi was on the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical
Competition in either 1966, 1967, or 1968. This shows that the formula
was known in the late 1960's, but not so well known that an undergraduate
taking the Putnam exam would be likely to have seen it before.

You might contact the Mathematical Association of America, which runs the
Putnam competition.
