It seems that our university library has a German translation of de la
Hodde's book, but, due to reshelving, it's not going to be available for
several months. But I've found another book by de la Hodde: La Naissance
de la Republique en Fervier 1848 (I am not trying to write accents). This
apparently deals with the period following the one covered by his other
book, so the only point in it of possible interest in the present context
is the mention of a certain N.Gallios (sic). That Gallois was a coeditor,
with Dubose, of the Journal du Peuple, and a member of a committee,
apparently a republican one. But all this happened, it seems, later than
1839. The book was published in Bruxelles in 1850, and it has 75 pages,
in small format, roughly an octavo, I think.
Returning to Galois' death, Rigatelli specificaaly says that her new
sources, and the basis for her surmise about that death, are the article
of the Lyons newspaper Le Precurseur, and the memoirs of Gisquet and of
de la Hodde. As I have pointed out in a previous message, she quotes the
newspaper report only partially, apparently omitting the parts that
contradict her theory. The report is quoted in Dalmas' book, which I have
not seen, and, from there, in Cooke's review of Rigatelli's book, and in
Rothman's articles. From Walter Felscher's message we know that de la
Hodde does not confirm Rigatelli's theory. Though de la Hodde confirms
that an uprising was planned for Galois' funeral, and at the last
minute was postponed to Lamarque's funeral. According to de la Hodde,
Lamarque was "at the point of death", while Rigatelli presents him as
having just died. We still have to know what Gisquet says. But I assume
that if Gisquet's memoir confirms Rigatelli's theory, she would have
quoted him. On the present evidence it seems that we have to conclude,
with Tony Rothman, that there is no evidence of any political background
for the duel.
