A good interpretation of Hilbert's 'ideal mathematics' relating it to Kant
can be found in the last chapter of Mary Tiles: Mathematics and the Image
of Reason (Routledge 1991).
(It does not answer the original question, but I too think that the 'ideal
mathematics' is Hilbert's self-understanding also of the GG.)
