Just a PS. I see that my short-term memory is failing me again. The
parallelism is not between "Begriff" and "Idee", but between "Begriff" and
"Verstanden". Hm... "concept" versus "understanding", then on to "Idee"
and "Vernunft" (idea or thinking vs. reason). I get the same overall
picture from both sentences, though the words don't mean precisely the
same thing. Both seem to be saying that the mind --- I think they mean
the collective minds of the human race --- first react unthinkingly to
sense impressions, then gradually begin to sort them out, and finally to
organize the world logically. Now I really will shut up.
