As far as I know, the original version, author, and date of the famous
"17-camel-problem" are unknown. Sanchez Perez, in his "La Aritmetica en
Roma, en India y en Arabia", remarks the following:

"Otro grupo muy interesante, al que se atribuye influencia oriental,
es el de particion de herencias o testamentos.
El mas original y sencillo es el del reparto de los 17 camellos,
atribuido a los arabes; pero creemos que no puede haberse planteado
como caso practico, puesto que entre los arabes no ha existido
legitima de 1/9, ni el reparto se ajusta a ninguna jurisprudencia
musulmana.

El problema aludido dice asi: 'Un arabe que tenia tres hijos ...'"

I encourage, in passing, not to change the "subject" header of the original
message unless the subject under discussion evolves considerably or there
is a good reason to do it.

When the "subject line" is changed, replies are not linked with the original
question, and it will be more difficult to locate them at the websites that
