Apropos of representation of numbers as sums of squares. Chapter 7 (pages
39-45) of "Diophantus and Diophantine eqations" by Bashmakova, recently
published by the MAA as #20 in their Dolciani series, takes the whole issue
back (in some ways) to the time of Diophantus.
