Many thanks to everyone who replied to my request concerning math films.
In order to not clutter mailboxes, I am appending below only those
messages that were *not* sent to the list previously. I have also
complied the complete set of replies, which I will be happy to send to
individuals who request it.

Dear David,

Jeremy Gray has drawn my attention to your appeal for information about
Mathematics films. We have made quite a large number here at the Open
University, including two series on history of mathematics and a variety
of others using historical topics as a contributory resource to mathematics
courses. Probably the best way in is for you to look at the OU's web page
which lists them all and gives details of how to acquire them.

http://www3.open.ac.uk/videos/ouw.dll?DESC694

The series that Jim Kiernan was referring to as "the best series I have
seen" is the series of eight programmes for our course MA290 'Topics in
the History of Mathematics'. Those made for other courses include the
history of computation film 'Wood Brass and Baboon Bones' which I sent
a list message about earlier today, the one Robin Wilson circulated the
list about on the four-colour theorem called 'Only four colours', and a
film on the life and legacy of Galois.

I look forward to seeing your list in due course,
All good wishes, John Fauvel

Here are two (both listed at the media center at UC Berkeley):

N is a number : a portrait of Paul Erdos, a documentary film / by George
Paul Csicsery. [videorecording] Oakland, Calif. : George Paul Csicsery,
c1993. VHS. Media Center VIDEO/C 4355

Was Newton's calculus just a dead end : Maclaurin and the Scottish
connection / Judith V. Grabiner. [videorecording] Washington, DC :
Mathematical Assoc. of America, 1991. VHS. AMS-MAA joint lecture
series [videorecording] Media Center VIDEO/C 2285

I have seen "N is a Number" twice, but have only seen Grabiner's live
talk--not the video. The talk was great, so I imagine the video would
be as well.
