[HM] Why T?

I read with interest comments recently by Mr Landau and Mr Schwartz on
the reasons for Gossett using "Student" in his writing, and even
quoted some of their reflections on a page about word origins for my
students. Afterword, it struck me that I did not know where the "T"
had come from, and more generally, the Z for normal curves, The F,
etc. Anyone who can enlighten me, or point me to a reference, your
kindness will not go unappreciated.
