dear HM-ers,
concerning the recent postings on klein & poincare (and cantor) i
would like to add that vol. 11 of poincare's "works" (i.e. oeuvre)
contains the exchange of letters between the two and in addition an
essay by freudenthal on their competition.
re cantor's appearance in mittag-leffler's "acta": W. Purkert/H.J.
Ilgauds in her biography "Georg Cantor, ..." (Basel 1987) state on p.
75 that among others also poincare participated in the translation of
cantor's essays for the acta. they don't give sources for this, but
i think one should find some evidence in the exchange of letters
between poincare and mittag-leffler (this was scheduled for
publication in 1999, but i havn't seen it yet; see math. intell. 21/2
(1999), 58) and/or the exchange between mittag-leffler and cantor
(which should be included in h. meschowski's edition of cantor's
letters). i also seem to remember that there is a biogrophy of
mittag-leffler and/or a history of the founding of the acta, where
one can find more details.
regards, bernd
