I've read the book, and its "blurb" is more sensational than its
content. White makes much of Newton's work in alchemy. One of the principles
of alchemy, according to White, is that there is more to it than the physical
activities. For a process to "work", the alchemist himself must have the
proper attitude.
White surmises that this proper attitude is a kind of action at a
distance, and Newton's accepting of action at a distance in the context of
alchemy helped him to accept action at a distance in the context of gravity.
