Dear Inge,
I'm supposed to know about Poincare/, but I have missed the solution of
algebraic equations in terms of what might be Fuchsian functions. Any one
know it?
On the other hand the solution of algebraic equations using modular
functions and theta functions goes back to Jordan's Traite and the modern
reader can pick up the thread in Umemura's essay in Mumford's Tata Lectures
on Theta, II (Birkha/"user, 1984).
Best wishes
