No one has yet mentioned the very nice essay by Philip J. Davis, "Of time
and mathematics," in which he posits that, indeed, mathematics as we know
it is not independent of time. The essay was first given in the Auburn U.
Franklin Lecture Series, and it later was reprinted in one of his books:
_3.1416 and All That_, if memory serves correctly.
