Bob:

I first encountered MATHS in England; I had been used to MATH in the U. S.

Let me consult an American dictionary:

The American Heritage Third: maths: chiefly British.

Now, the Chambers Dictionary, Edinburgh, 1993: colloquial short form maths,
                                                                or U S math.
Best wishes,

Sam Kutler
