Dear list members,

related to the "maths"/"math" question:

why is it that in some languages one says "mathematicS" and in others
the equivalent of "mathematic" (Portuguese, for instance, and it is
interesting to note that Spanish, although *very* close to Portuguese,
has "matema'ticas" instead).

Also, why is it that in the US one says "mathematics education" but in
the UK one says "mathematical education"? Is this a particular case of
some general difference between US and UK English?

All the best,
Romulo
