There are at least two papers on arithmetic with Roman numerals.

1. Arch Hist Ex. Sci. 15 (1981)

and

2. Am. Math. MONTHLY 88 (1981).

Long before 1981, I read another, but I now have lost the reference.
This list is surely incomplete.
