The first ideas about topology and covering spaces appear in Riemann's
doctoral thesis in 1851, written under Gauss "Grundlagen fur eine
allgemaine Theorie der Functionen einer veranderlichen complexen Grosse"
(not in his inaugural lecture!)
according math history class by Anil Nerode I was taking about 19th century
mathematics
