In a book I read the words, which are ascribed to J.J.Sylvester:

"I am not mathematician, I am adeptus".

I ask you to answer me the following questions:

1. Do these words in real belong to J.J.Sylvester ?
2. When and under what circumstances did he say that ?
3. What his mathematical results testify for a validity of these words ?
